How to Fix Instagram Story Replies Not Notifying (Sender or Creator)

How to Fix Instagram Story Replies Not Notifying (Sender or Creator)

Have you ever thought of the scenario where you have replied to someone, but they didn’t receive your message? It is all because of these common reasons:

  • They might have disabled their in-app notifications
  • Your message lands in Message Requests, not in a Direct Message. (Your friend and you don’t follow each other.)

More reasons are also there. But to understand what they are and how you can solve this problem, you just need to read the whole blog. Before jumping to the troubleshooting solutions, take a look at the table below to clear all your doubts.

Instagram Story Replies vs Comments

First, let me clarify the main difference between Instagram story replies and comments, as most users got confused.

Feature  Story Reply  Story Comment
Visibility  Private, as only the creator can see the reply in their DMs.  Public, as it is visible to all viewers of the story.
Notification to Sender The reply is delivered as a standard DM. Moreover, there is no public indicator or notification on the story itself.  It appears directly under the Story. In addition, the creator will get a notification just like a post comment.
Where It Appears In the creator’s Direct Messages inbox. On the story itself, just like feed posts’ comments.
Duration It stays permanent unless you delete the chat by yourself. It is only for a temporary basis, as it disappears when the story expires. It means after 24 hours, your comments will also vanish unless you have saved them as a highlight.
Who Can Send Anyone who views the story.  Mutual followers who you follow and who follow you back. Plus, it can be easily customized within the settings.
Community Aspect One-to-one conversation Group or community interaction that will be visible to all viewers.
Engagement Type
  • Private feedback,
  • Reactions,
  • Or direct conversation.
  • Public discussion,
  • Feedback,
  • And visible engagement.
Notification Issue  Replies don’t provide any notifications to other viewers. Only creators can see within their Direct Messages inbox.  Comments will appear publicly and trigger a visible notification. Thus, the sender knows it is posted.

Key Points to be Noted!

  • When any user replies to the creator’s story, they will be notified directly in their Direct Messages (DMs). Moreover, in the story, the reply will not be added, so there is a high possibility that users will miss out on the alert. And it is designed in this way, not any technical bug.
  • Creators can easily turn Story comments on or off. However, replies or Direct Messages will be visible unless they have changed their privacy settings.

Why Is Everyone Ghosting My Story Replies? (The Real-Life Problem)

My friend and I are very close to each other. We share every thought without worrying about what they will think about us. But one day, when I was stuck in a bigger problem, I thought about replying to their story. As a result, it will help them to know my current situation. Even after 24 hours, they didn’t see or open my text message. To make the situation worse, they had seen that I had viewed their story but didn’t say anything. As a result, it created a huge misunderstanding. It all happened because the push notification didn’t reach on time, and Instagram’s API assumed that my friend had already seen the story ration.

Why Am I Not Being Notified When I Reply to Someone Else?

Here is why you are not getting any notifications when you reply to their stories.

  • You have disabled system notifications. By doing so, your device’s main operating system has restricted notifications from popping up on the home screen.
  • There is a possibility that you have already toggled your Instagram profile settings. Or you have disabled all the notifications of Instagram direct messages
  • You are using your phone in a battery-saving, DND, sleep, or work mode. As a result, all your daily activities are kept on hold.
  •  Sometimes, you forget to accept message requests . In other words, the other user is not currently on your followers list. So, when they send you any text, it won’t trigger the notification. This often happens because Instagram DM requests disappear from the main view, meaning you have to manually hunt them down to accept them.
  • Moreover, it could happen that Instagram has restricted your profile because of engaging in spammy behavior or sending irrelevant content. By taking this action, it blocks all access to get notifications.
  • There might be a temporarily corrupted app cache on your device that causes notification failures.
  • Here, you can also check whether there are some background restrictions because of operating your device in specific modes that pause all notifications from appearing.
  • There is a chance that the user has turned off story replies or customized the settings for people who follow them back.

What Hidden Technical Bugs Are Blocking My Notifications?

Here, I will let you know some hidden technical errors and the reason behind them.

  1. If someone replies to other users’ stories at the very end of the time, the notification will not often trigger.

Reason Behind It: When the story is going to expire on Instagram, Meta’s API is designed in a way that deletes all the related data, whether it is a video, photo, or even a reply, permanently from the server. Moreover, if you try to send a message when the story is expiring, the text remains available in a DM inbox. But the preview of the reaction or a text will disappear. Plus, the notification goes away because the original post vanishes.

  1. Managing multiple accounts on a device can break the notification syncing cycle.

Reason Behind It: When another user replies to a Creator’s story, Instagram usually notifies them about the same. However, if you have other active accounts, whether on your mobile or a desktop, Instagram gets confused between them. It assumes that you have already seen the particular reply. That is why it doesn’t provide you with any alert.

  1. As discussed earlier, there might be some background data restriction interferences.

Reason Behind It: When you turn on any low-data or power-saver threshold, it automatically restricts background data. Moreover, Instagram’s system provides you push notifications when you start using the IG or actively wake up.
